3 weeks post op

Listen to your surgeon. No matter how much you don’t want to or think you don’t need to. If I’ve learned anything through this process, it is that.

Everyone knows that it’s been a rough recovery for me. I had the hematoma. And for the most part, it is gone. Just a little bruising left, but that’ll be gone in no time, I’m sure.

We are in North Carolina now for the summer. We went against doctor’s orders. I thought I would be great and have no more problems. But, I was wrong.

Friday night into Saturday, I was struggling with breathing. My husband took me into the local ER. They did a ton of tests, and luckily did not find a leak. But, there was fluid on my left lung and around my heart. Doctor said that there could be pneumonia but the fluid was covering it up. They gave me antibiotics and asked about the breathing exercises my doctor told me to continue after leaving the hospital. Well, I’m stubborn and thought I didn’t need to do them. Obviously, I was wrong. So they gave me a new spirometer. And I’ve been using it like crazy since the ER.

The first night on antibiotics was horrendous. I was in the bathroom every 10-20 minutes with the runs and ended up dry heaving on top of that. The prescription anti-nausea meds didn’t do a lick of good. Hubby ended up picking up Imodium and some other meds to help with the nausea. After finally being able to fall asleep (sitting straight up, I might add) things started to get better.

Seriously, listen to your surgeon. No matter how much you don’t want to. You need to. It’s for your own health. I had to call my surgeon’s office this morning and explain all the orders I went against. Kind of felt like a dog with my tail between my legs. But, again, the nurse was so understanding and non-critical. Made me feel a little better.

A few things I’ve noticed. First, brushing my teeth a few days ago, I realized my face had slimmed down. I didn’t know it would happen that fast.

Yesterday, I was sitting in the living room and was able to sit with my legs crossed. COMFORTABLY! (Don’t mind the ghost white skin)

Let’s talk stats! This week, my BMI came down enough to bring me out of the “morbidly obese” range! I’m stoked!

Heaviest weight: 316

Starting weight: 311

Surgery weight: 294.1

Week 1: 290.4

Week 2: 275.8

Week 3: 267.4

My name is Jessica Wolfe. I am the wife of an incredible man and father. He and I have been together longer than we have been apart. We have two sons, one is 18 and a freshman at Indiana State University majoring in Music Education. Our 13 year old son is in the 7th grade and is being home schooled. My vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery was on June 16, 2016. My total gastrectomy was March 3, 2017. I’ve recently found out I have a fairly large benign tumor in my brain. I also have something going on in my lower spine between my L5 and S1. It seems as though surgery is imminent. Through this blog, I share my life with you and am brutally honest with myself so that when I do look back, I can see what it was that made me make the decisions I did. I also welcome opinions and questions as it challenges my thoughts and helps me grow from where I am. If you want to check me out anywhere else, please do! 1. You’ll get there!! At 3 weeks out I was still doing a mile or two at a time and worked up… but other than blood clots I didn’t have the issues you have had post-op. So it’s kind of like comparing apples to oranges, you know? Give yourself time! You’ll be knocking out 8 miles in a few months too. 🙂
